Why The Construction Industry Needs More Women

The construction industry is growing and needs more workers of all genders! Here at Girl Contracting, though, we’re specifically focused on encouraging more women to make careers in the construction industry. Every one of our projects is managed by a female contractor, and we’re also a minority-owned and operated firm. We’re working to change the face of construction!

We believe that women make every industry stronger, including construction, and in today’s blog post, we’re sharing why the construction industry needs more women. Continue reading to learn more, and if you’re in need of a construction company in Philadelphia, contact our team today!

Diversity of Ideas

Construction is all about problem-solving, and the way to come up with the best solutions to your problems is to brainstorm as many ideas as possible! When your construction comapny is composed only of men, you’re missing out on the diversity of ideas that women can bring. Women can introduce new methods or approaches to problem-solving that haven’t been explored yet, and diversity drives innovation.

All workplaces should seek diversity in ideas and team members, including the construction industry. Our goal should always be to create and support the best team possible, and that team should, and must, include women.

Culture Change

Women make up only about a tenth of the construction industry. Even when a woman is interested in pursuing a career in construction, the prospect of being the only woman at the job site can be overwhelming and may deter women from entering the field.

By hiring and supporting women in the industry, we can shift the male-dominated culture. For us to overcome the idea that construction is only for men, we need to change the culture in our industry. Part of doing that is hiring more women, but it’s also up to those of us in the field to do our part to create organizations that are open and welcoming to people from all walks of life.

Mentoring Other Women

As the industry grows and recruits more and more women, those expert craftspeople will be able to mentor and encourage other women in the field. The real progress begins when young girls can see themselves in the profession and can find mentors to guide them as they learn and grow.
